Hunting the G̶a̶m̶e̶  Gang Lands

Seldom does a book appear which carefully chronicles the making and development of a serious and successful hunter, while carefully imparting important tips and suggestions.  Hunting the G̶a̶m̶e̶ Gang Lands is such a book.  While there are many “how to” books available, probably the most popular which are about hunting whitetail deer, most are about bagging trophy bucks.  This one, by Tom Nawrocki, a land surveyor who spends most of his waking hours in the out of doors, covers more than that, although Tom is always after the big buck.

This book is chronologically well laid out, beginning with Tom’s upbringing in Pennsylvania in a family of hunters who appreciated, the outdoors and what it had to offer.  Woven throughout the text are Tom’s experiences, good and bad, and while most treatments dwell on the successful endeavors, Tom’s words include the mistakes and bad choices that most of us are liable to make.  That in itself is a valuable learning aid.

Another huge asset of this book is its illustrations, not only of trophy animals and how they were taken, but of hunting tactics, including approaches, stands, and positions.  Tom’s wisdom and experience shines through with his descriptions of many visits to selected locations looking for telltale signs and contemplating procedures far in advance of the actual hunt.  Opening day, or the day before, is not the time to begin preparations; plans must be put in place months prior to the actual hunt, and Tom’s success bears witness to its effectiveness.

Tom has learned to think like the animal he pursues.  His philosophy is summed up simply, “Get up high, stay downwind, and let him bleed.”

As he says in his closing words, “I don’t tell people how to hunt, I tell people how I hunt.”  If you learn to hunt like Tom, with your own experiences and preferences, and with perseverance and cunning, you are bound to be a successful whitetail hunter.
